It's a Joke

Is it me, or does everyone in the country think that four preseason football games is a joke. I understand that teams need to practice before the season but that is way to many games before the season. Players are getting hurt left and right for no reason and are taking away some big name players from the game. There are already 16 games plus post season and for there to be four extra games just to see what practice squad players are going to make it just doesn’t work. In this article (http://www.nysun.com/article/59877) it explains the real reason for preseason football, business. The owners could care less that fans don't like it or even the players, all they care about is making money. It's kind of sad that football has come down to this. In another article (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/football/cowboys/stories/090107dnspoluksa.26ceb8e.html )
it shows all the big name players that usually don’t play a lot or at all during preseason. Now I do believe that this hurts the players during the season it just goes to show that the players don't even like it. But to go against my argument I do think that the big names should play a little. For example LT is having a really bad year. I believe one of the reasons is because he didn’t play one snap during preseason. It's tough to go out and play at full speed without playing at all. Now I understand that coaches have to make the rosters for the season, but I think they know by the third games who they want. In my opinion they should cut one preseason game and add one extra regular season game.

Brian, I agree with you completely. Preseason football in the NFL has almost become a waste of time. The only purpose I see in it is that this is the time in which teams decide on their cuts and who they will carry on their 53 man roster. The fact that the reigning MVP, Ladanian Tomlinson, decided to sit out of preseason just makes it seem like even more of a joke. Teams need to either play their players in preseason with a significant amount of playing time or forget the preseason concept as a whole. Though it may seem worthwhile, I feel that the only thing it is really doing is making way for players to get injured. So ultimately I would say that preseason football needs to be done away with completely.

Yeah the preseason is a big joke to me. The LT thing makes me a little mad but it's his fault for sitting out and taking it easy during the preseason. But I think they should just keep the 16 game schedule or add another game. It is even more tough in rookies coming into the leauge since they are only used to playing in about 12, 13 games tops in college. Going from that to an almost 20 games in one season is rediculous. I hope they get rid of it and play games that matter, not to see who makes the team. Decide that in training camp.

Brian, I agree with you that the Preseason is long and has injury potential, but I can see it from the other side. Owners spend a lot of money to try to attract fans. The Preseason games help the owners to get some of the money they spent back. Imagine being the colts owner and having to pay Peyton Manning 35 million in 2004. Also, I think the regular season is good with 16 games. The system is working well and I don't see any reason to add on more games. Injuries just happen in the preseason, but they happen during practice, regular, season, playoffs, and the offseason. Arguing the elimination of a preseason game just because of risk of injury is a week argument. I think the NFL is fine right now with its setup.

I'm going t have to disagree with you on this. I think pre-season is an essential part of football. It gives players and coaches a chance to see what their opponents are trying to do on offense and defense as far as personnel goes. From there you can see what your team needs to work on. Sure, there are injuries but that's a part of the game, That's why you limit the time of your starters so that they stay in long enough to get a feel for their opponents before they go full speed in their season openers. What I do think is a joke though is players who decide to sit out, such as LT. I kno if I were LT, I would want to see who my opposing coach is going to send to try knock my head off.
